You & Me

You & Me

Summer is here and there’s a bunch of exciting stuff going on that I can’t wait to share! First off, there’s going to be a brand new video for the song You & Me in a few weeks. The team and I wrapped shooting in the wee hours this morning at a top secret location on Toronto’s west end and I can’t thank everyone enough for their hard work and efforts. I’m a bit bleary eyed but I really think this one is gonna be amazing! Stay tuned…

Also, I’m totally thrilled to announce that I’ll be opening for Sufjan Stevens on August 3rd at Prospect Park in Brooklyn, NY! Outdoor shows are always amazing and this one is extra special because it’ll be the last time Sufjan and Co. perform live in their current neon-electro-party formation. Expect to be picking stray pieces of confetti out of your hair for weeks! Tickets are going quick so get on it while you still can…

Remix Rainbow Part Six

Remix Rainbow Part Six

Today’s a big day for me in a few ways. For starters, today marks the completion of the Remix Rainbow Series, a six week long project that has taught me so much about not only myself but also all of my friends and musical acquaintances who have generously trusted me to re-imagine their own hard work in a new and unique form.  Trust me when I say that it was an honour and a privilege.

Today’s remix artist(s) hail from Berlin, Germany and Hamilton, Canada – which may not be as weird as you think, if you actually think about it. Junior Boys are one of the top electronic acts in the game right now and getting a crack at their track, “A Truly Happy Ending” (from their recently released album It’s All True) was a real thrill. They’re actually in the middle of a huge North American tour with my main man (and Remix Rainbow alumnus) Miracle Fortress, so check ‘em out in a town near you!

Today also marks the re-release of my debut record Special Affections on Astralwerks. I couldn’t be more thrilled about the way things have worked out with this album of songs that I never really imagined anyone other than my Mom or roommates would ever hear, so thanks to any and everyone who has shown me love and support throughout this past year. I couldn’t have done this alone!

Chances are most of you are already familiar with Handsome Furs. Singer/guitarist/husband Dan Boeckner (Wolf Parade) and eletronic beatsmasher/dance partier/wife Alexei Perry are from Montreal and will be releasing their third album Sound Kapital on June 28th via Sub Pop. I’ve already had the privilege of hearing it and can assure you that it’s some heavy duty stuff.

I had a blast working on this remix and want to thank Dan and Alexei for being extra supportive throughout the whole process! These last few weeks have been crazy busy with touring and press, and getting to EQ that nasty metallic snare sound was probably the only thing that’s kept me sane. Check it out below!

Featured this week is Theophilus London, a Brooklyn, NY based artist whose full length debut Timez Are Weird These Days will be dropping June 19th on Warner Bros. I was first introduced to his music a couple of years ago when I heard his take on Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” from one of his early mixtapes. There’s no word on whether or not Theo’s new record will have a Whitney cameo but I’m looking forward to hearing it nonetheless…

The song I’ve remixed is called “Why Even Try” and also features some extra sassy backing vocals from Sara Quin of Tegan and Sara fame. Get it while it’s hot.

Remix Rainbow Part Three

This week’s Remix Rainbow featured artist is one of the most fascinatingly prolific musicians out there. I first met Motëm years ago at a basement punk show and since then have become a true fan. This is the kind of artist who is always focused on the next sound and the next song, and has released countless albums, EPs, and singles that range from electro funk to hip hop to his latest obsession, the Scandinavian sub-genre Skweee. In partnership with designer (and fellow Hamilton resident) Errol Richardson, he’s created dozens of wildly inventive music videos, in addition to maintaining his own imprint and blog, known as the Gebbz Steelo Boutique.

The song I’ve chosen to remix was featured on his latest release, Tales From The Cryptid, and is called “True Douglas”. And what is a “True Douglas”, exactly? It’s what I want to be and what Motëm has always been. Take a listen and come check him out for yourself at our NXNE Showcase at Wrongbar June 18th.

Without the advice and encouragement of today’s featured Remix Rainbow artist it’s safe to say that Diamond Rings may never have made it out of my own bedroom. A few years ago I had just moved to Toronto with little more than a handful of chord progressions and about as many friends to boot. Fortunately for me, Katie Stelmanis was one of them! Katie not only helped me find a musical community here in the city but also gave me the confidence to learn how to make electronic music by myself.

Now recording and performing under the name Austra, Katie’s debut album Feel It Break was released by Domino last week. I’m honoured to have been given the chance to remix “Lose It”, which is also my favourite song on the record. You don’t need opera training to write a hit tune, but sometimes it really helps! Thanks for showing me the ropes, Stelmanis.

Since returning from tour in April I’ve been busy quite literally cleaning house here in Toronto. Finding new places for all the clothes and kicks I picked up on the road is hard work!

All kidding aside, I’ve actually been renovating my home studio and fiddling with gear pretty much non-stop. Fortunately, my spare time has been devoted to taking in all of the great music that my friends and musical allies have been releasing this spring. Good work, everybody! So now that my working conditions have improved and my pals are just killing it musically, I’ve decided to celebrate and announce a new project!

Remix Rainbow is a six part series I’ve been working on as a thank-you to the aforementioned group of artists whose recent work has brought me a sense of newfound inspiration. I’ll be releasing one remix for free download every Tuesday until June 21st, which is also the date my debut full length Special Affections is being re-released worldwide via Astralwerks. The artwork for each remix will represent a different colour of the Diamond Rings rainbow and when compiled together they’ll make a pretty cool sonic artifact for the digital age.

I can’t tell you all of the artists involved, but I can tell you that this week’s remix is “Raw Spectacle” from the latest Miracle Fortress album Was I The Wave? which was recently released by my OGs at Secret City in Montreal. If you haven’t heard this record yet I can assure you that it is phenomenally emotive and incredibly uplifting. The fact that MF’s mastermind Graham Van Pelt is a fantastic human being and an excellent teammate on the basketball courts just seals the deal.

Hey Yo!

If you haven’t heard the news already I’ve just signed a record deal with EMI subsidiary Astralwerks. The New York City based label will be re-releasing Special Affections on June 21st, 2011 and I couldn’t be more excited. Sharing the same label as Kylie Minogue, Pet Shop Boys, and Bryan Ferry (among others) is a dream come true and quite honestly still feels a bit surreal!

Montreal’s Secret City Records will still be handling all things Diamond Rings within Canada and I really want to thank the label for continuing to support me as I take this next big step. Cheers!

Right now I’m looking forward to not only writing a bunch of new songs but also getting back on the road and bringing my music to new fans and friends all over the place. Keep your eyes and ears open!

I’m both happy and sad to say that what has been the longest tour of my entire life is almost over. Happy because I’m tired. Sad because it was so much fun! Both the NYC and Brooklyn shows with PS I Love You were amazing and I want to thank everyone for coming out and being so kind to us. There’s some hot pics over at Brooklyn Vegan if you’re curious! They also have a blurb about the impending reformation of my new (and old) band Matters. Check it out!

Also – I’m going to be playing a few shows with Robyn this summer to make up for the ones that were canceled when she got sick a few months ago. All you need to know is on the Events page as usual. Shorts!

What Up?!  Just a quick report from yours truly, holding it down in Austin, Texas at SXSW.  Thanks to all of you for giving it up for both myself and PS I Love You for the past three weeks on the road.  Tour has been a blast but it’s nice to have this week to chill out and enjoy the sun.  If you’re around for the festival I’ve got a whole whack of dates up on the Events page.  Check ‘em out and come say hi!

The Diamond Rings + PS I Love You Leftovers Tour resumes in Edmonton (brrrr) on the 22nd of March!  See you there, cowboys!
